Types of Cancer
A person is said to be suffering from cancer when he has a condition whereby there is an abnormal growth of cells or tissues in his body. This tumor keeps growing pushing aside the healthy cells and damaging them in the process. This growth normally goes unnoticed until things become obvious through, a lump, persistent pain, soreness or abnormal swelling. However, symptoms of cancer vary according to the types of the cancer. Colon cancer may have symptoms like, changes in stool size, diarrhea and constipation; skin cancer may have symptoms like, change in the mole on the skin or wart. Cancer may be either benign or malignant. A benign cancer is still in its early stages and is yet to spread to other body parts. Cancer if detected at this stage may as well be cured as it’s not yet complicated. However, same cannot be said for a malignant cancer which is in advanced stage and has grown and spread to other parts of the body beyond the point of its origin.
Cancer can be classified as mentioned below:
• Sarcoma: In sarcoma cancer the tumors grow in the fats, bones, muscles, tissues etc.
• Leukemia: This is the tumor that develops in the bone marrow and finally accumulates in the bloodstream
• Carcinoma: In such case the cancerous cells cover both the external and internal parts of the body like, breast, lung
• Lymphoma: Such cancers begin in the lymph nodes and immune system tissues
• Adenoma: This type of cancer arises in the thyroid, adrenal gland, pituitary gland and other glandular tissues
It’s important not to ignore the early signs and report the matter to the doctor. The doctor may put the patient through some tests in order to diagnose and arrive at the exact reason or confirm that it is actually cancer that the person is suffering from. The doctor may recommend tests like, MRI, CT scan, x-ray, ultrasound, PET scan, endoscopy, physical examination etc. These tests not only help the doctor confirm whether its cancer or not but also see the extent to which the cancer has grown or damaged the healthy cells.
Once the cause is determined the appropriate treatment should immediately follow. However, treatment too differs and depends as per the age of the patient, size, location, extent of the tumor etc.
Treatment for cancer includes the following:
• Surgery: It is done to cut open the affected area and remove as much of the sarcoma as possible. This helps to stop the sarcoma cancer from reoccurring and also thwart any possibility of exposure to chemotherapy or radiation therapy in future.
• Radiation therapy: It is made use of when the cancer has affected a particular area in the body. It aims high energy beams in the affected areas to kill the cancerous cells and curtail the growth. It may either be used before or after the surgery. It is applied before the surgery to shrink the tumor as much as possible so that the person may have to endure only a smaller surgery. Hoever, the need of a post surgery arises to kill any of the remaining sarcoma cancer that may have advanced to other body parts. Usually, a post surgery treatment for radiation therapy doesn’t start at least before 6 to 12 weeks after the operation
• Chemotherapy: It is usually done to shrink the growing tumor so that it becomes easy to remove it. This helps kill the rapidly spreading cancerous cells. That means chemotherapy can treat all the areas in the body that might have got affected even beyond the point of origin of the cancer.
Cancer is a deadly disease and much of the survival chance depends on the patient himself. He shouldn’t ignore the abnormal changes taking place in his body and consult a doctor. If the cancer advances and spreads to other areas of the body even the doctor wouldn’t have much option at his disposal.
